Some parents and friends often complain to me, saying that their children at home always have a lot of excuses before bedtime. They want to hear a story, but after finishing, they say there's something else to tell their parents. But actually, they are just playing with toys. They might even say they are thirsty and need to go to the bathroom after drinking water. In short, they refuse to sleep for an hour (or even longer)!

This book is for parents of children aged 3-5. Their children may start using delaying tactics to avoid going to bed. The main character in the book, Ted, is the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, during his childhood. (Parents, even the President, had a lot of excuses before bedtime when he was a child.) Children may easily relate to this energetic boy, especially when it comes to Ted's process of going to bed (or not). Throughout the story, his mother gently and firmly mentions what Ted may be known for in the future, such as his love for nature and the great outdoors, scouting, sailing, and hunting (and snoring). One day, he may even find his way to care for the mountains he loves. (The story ends with relevant historical references.) Children will be interested in thinking about what they have in common with the future President, laugh at his funny antics, and then peacefully fall asleep, perhaps dreaming of becoming someone great one day.

Although the rhyming in the book can be a bit forced at times, overall, it is a realistic portrayal of the process from children's bedtime to finally agreeing to sleep. It allows children to identify with it quickly and serves as an interesting introduction to biographies, making it perfect for a bedtime story.

What do you like to do when you have a little bit of free time? Nowadays, it's common for people to immediately reach for their phones, even while walking. One day, I saw a pretty girl walking quickly and texting at the same time in the mall, and she bumped into a standing sign. In restaurants, it's not hard to spot children watching videos or playing games on their phones while eating, teenagers watching short videos while waiting in line at the supermarket, and parents sitting next to the playground scrolling through social media, completely missing out on their own children's newly learned skills while playing... It seems like it's becoming increasingly challenging to "be present," "walk properly," and "eat properly."

In this book, a mouse named Applesource receives an iPhone from a boy. It was initially meant to be for a 10-minute playtime, but 10 minutes turns into another 10 minutes, and the phone becomes permanently his. Because Applesource spends his entire day glued to his phone, he is completely oblivious to the surprise trip the boy has planned for him. He even causes a huge mess at the zoo! He couldn't care less about how it all ends because, in his mind, running out of battery is a more disastrous situation than the end of the world!

Children may find it amusing and laugh at how exaggerated and engulfed in phone usage Applesource is. You may ask them, are you like Applesource? What have you missed out on while being on your phone? Is it worth missing out on these activities?

You Choose

"You Choose" is a fantastic picture book that showcases various scenes with minimal text. It's a book that encourages children to let their imaginations soar! For example, when looking at a bird's eye view of a whole city, where would you like to go and explore? How would you dress yourself if you were presented with different clothing styles? What furniture and decorations would you choose if you could decorate your house? And why?

Even if children are unfamiliar with specific terms, it is okay. When they point to "this" or "that," it presents a valuable opportunity for them to learn new words. For children who already have a certain level of language proficiency, this activity can further enrich their vocabulary and sentence structures. Most importantly, we can gain insight into children's preferences and imaginative worlds through this book.
